Summer Blues…

August 19th, 2021

Healthy Kidtchen is back!  Its’s been a busy summer that has flown by too quickly.  Once August 1st hits, I begin to think about back to school. After cleaning out closets, organizing clothes and the pantry, I always dread this time of year but at the same time I look forward to the challenge of a new school year.  With that being said, I am always thinking about my kids and how to change up their food and snack routine to keep it interesting.  Many kids are reaching for snacks throughout the day, because they get hungry in between meals.  Healthy snacks can provide your kids with energy and help them get the nutrients they need on a daily basis. It is so important to offer your kids whole, unprocessed foods at snack time instead of prepackaged snack foods.  Here are some ideas of healthy snacks to increase energy and satisfy hunger cravings.

  1. Apple nachos with granola – slice an apple, cover with nut or seed butter of your choice and top with granola (homemade granola is best)

2. Whole wheat pita chips with hummus – see hummus recipe linked above for a quick and easy high protein snack

          3.  Homemade yogurt dip with fresh fruit

4.  Tortilla pizzas – take whole wheat tortillas, top with sauce and part skim mozzarella cheese and toast until browned

5.  Nut butter and banana quesadillas – Spread your favorite nut butter on a whole wheat tortilla, add bananas and a sprinkle of cinnamon and brown

These are just a few of the healthy snacks I suggest.  Stay tuned for my fall class offerings, can’t wait for the virtual fun to begin!!!
